In a crucial Brandenburg state election, Chancellor Scholz's Social Democrats narrowly defeated the far-right AfD, securing 31% vs 29% amid record 73% turnout. This victory, partly driven by strategic voting, offers a glimmer of hope for Scholz's struggling national government. However, extremist parties collectively garnered 45% support, signaling deep political divisions. The result contrasts with recent AfD gains in Saxony and Thuringia, where they led polls.

Social Democrats fend off AfD in crucial German state election, according to exit polls

Some brief thoughts on the Brandenburg election. The SPD only barely beats the AfD but coming first has a lot of symbolic meaning for the SPD and the democratic mainstream. ThΓΌringen has not gone viral.

In Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, the ruling Social Democrats eeked out a comeback win, nipping the surging right-wing AfD, which has seen success elsewhere, prominently in the East. But this came at the expense of coalition partners The Greens, who likely crash out of regional parliament

Preliminary final results in the #Brandenburg state election: SPD: 30.9% (+4.7) AfD: 29.2% (+5.7) BSW: 13.5% (new) CDU: 12.1% (-3.5) GRÜNE: 4.1% (-6.7) LINKE: 3.0% (-7.7) #Farright AfD surge blunted by the SPD & BSW, but a disaster for the left, greens & CDU. #ltwbb #brandenburgwahl2024 #Germany
